Products & materials
What are your products actually made from?
Thick-gauge steel, cut and welded in our own workshop. The exact thickness varies by product, because a fire basket and a rocket stove have different structural demands, and we specify what each design genuinely needs rather than applying one number across the range.
Where it meets our quality standard, we work with recycled and reclaimed steel. Steel can be melted down and reused indefinitely without degrading, which makes it one of the better materials to build with if you care about that.
Will it rust?
Steel left outdoors will develop surface patina over time. That is normal and expected for this kind of product, and for many people it's part of the appeal, since the surface darkens and settles into something that looks better after a season than it did new.
What we design against is structural failure. Thin sheet metal burns through, warps, and eventually splits at the seams. Our products are built heavy enough that surface weathering stays cosmetic rather than becoming a problem.
If you want to slow the process, store it under cover during the wettest months, or oil the surface lightly at the end of the season. Neither is required, but both help.
Can I leave it outside all year?
Yes. These are built to stay where you put them. Frost, rain, and snow will not damage the structure.
Two practical suggestions. Empty the ash before winter, since wet ash holds moisture against the steel. And if the product sits directly on soil or grass, a paving slab or gravel base underneath will keep the legs out of standing water.
Do they come assembled?
Most of our products arrive fully assembled and ready to use. Some models have removable or folding parts for transport, which slot together without tools in under a minute.
If a product needs any assembly, it's stated clearly on that product's page before you buy. We don't send flat-pack puzzles.
Can you make a custom size or design?
Often, yes. Custom fabrication is what our workshop does for commercial clients, so a one-off consumer piece is well within what we can handle.
Email us at sjrisinajumi@inbox.lv with what you have in mind, including rough dimensions and where it will live. We'll tell you honestly whether it's practical and what it would cost.
How heavy are they?
Heavier than the mass-market alternatives, which is deliberate. Weight comes from steel thickness, and steel thickness is what keeps a product from warping under repeated heat.
Exact weights are listed on each product page. In practice, most models are comfortably movable by one or two people, but they're designed to sit in a garden or by a summer house rather than to be carried far.
Using & caring for it
What can I burn in it?
Dry seasoned firewood is what these are designed for. Hardwoods like birch, oak, and ash burn longer and cleaner than softwoods.
Avoid treated or painted timber, pallets with unknown coatings, and anything with plastic or glue in it. Beyond the smoke being unpleasant, those release chemicals you don't want near food if you're cooking.
Charcoal works well in the grills and fire pits. For the rocket stoves, small split wood gives the best draw and the cleanest burn.
Is it safe to cook on?
Yes. The cooking surfaces are bare steel with no coating that could transfer into food.
Before your first cook, run a hot fire for twenty minutes or so to burn off any residue from fabrication, then wipe the surface down. After that, treat it like cast iron: wipe clean while warm, and a light coat of oil keeps the surface in good condition.
How do I clean it?
Empty the ash once it's fully cold. A stiff brush handles most of it.
For cooking surfaces, scrape while still warm and wipe with a cloth. Avoid harsh detergents, since they strip the seasoning that builds up over time and actually protects the steel.
Don't hose down a hot product. Rapid cooling from a cold-water shock is one of the few things that genuinely stresses steel.
How close can it be to a fence, wall, or decking?
Keep at least two metres of clearance from anything flammable, including fences, sheds, overhanging branches, and garden furniture.
On wooden decking, use a heat-resistant base or paving slab underneath. Radiant heat travels downward as well as up, and decking boards will scorch over repeated use without protection.
Check your local rules before buying if you live in a dense residential area. Some municipalities restrict open fires during dry periods, and a few have year-round restrictions.
Delivery
How much does shipping cost?
Nothing. Delivery is free to every EU member state with no minimum order value.
The price you see on the product page is the price you pay at checkout. No shipping added at the last step, no handling fees, no surprises.
How long will it take to arrive?
We dispatch within 2 to 3 business days of your order. After that, typical delivery times are:
- Latvia and the Baltics: 2 to 4 business days
- Central Europe: 4 to 7 business days
- Nordic countries: 5 to 8 business days
- Western Europe: 5 to 8 business days
- Southern Europe: 6 to 10 business days
These are estimates rather than guarantees. Public holidays and carrier backlogs can add a few days.
Which countries do you ship to?
All 27 European Union member states.
We don't currently ship outside the EU. If you're elsewhere and interested, email us and we'll tell you honestly whether it's workable for your location.
Can I track my order?
Yes. You'll get a shipping confirmation email with a tracking number as soon as your order leaves us. We ship via Express Post, and you can follow the parcel at express.pasts.lv.
What if it arrives damaged?
Photograph the damage and email us within 48 hours of delivery at sjrisinajumi@inbox.lv with your order number.
We'll arrange a replacement or a full refund, and we cover the return shipping. This is our problem to solve, not yours.
Ordering & payment
What payment methods do you accept?
Credit and debit cards, Apple Pay, and Google Pay, all processed securely through Stripe. We also offer Klarna, which lets you split the cost into instalments if you'd rather not pay everything up front.
We never see or store your card details. Stripe handles that side entirely.
Is checkout secure?
Yes. The site runs on encrypted HTTPS, and payments go through Stripe, which is the same infrastructure used by a large share of European online retailers.
Your card number never touches our servers.
Do I need to create an account?
No. You can check out as a guest with just an email address and delivery details.
Creating an account is optional and only useful if you want to view past orders in one place.
Are prices VAT inclusive?
Yes. Prices shown include applicable VAT. There is nothing further to pay on delivery within the EU, and no customs charges, since your order never leaves the single market.
Can I change or cancel my order?
If it hasn't shipped yet, email us as soon as you can and we'll amend or cancel it. We usually dispatch within 2 to 3 business days, so there's a short window.
If it has already shipped, you can still return it under the 14-day right of return once it arrives.
Returns & warranty
Can I return it if I change my mind?
Yes. You have 14 days from delivery to return any product for a full refund, no reason required. This is your right under EU consumer law and we don't make it awkward.
The product needs to come back unused and in its original condition. Return shipping is at your cost, and we recommend a tracked service.
Email sjrisinajumi@inbox.lv with the subject line "Return Request" and your order number, and we'll send you the return address within two business days.
How long do refunds take?
We process the refund within 7 days of the returned product arriving with us. It goes back to whichever method you originally paid with.
Your bank may take a few additional days to show it, which is outside our control.
What does the warranty cover?
Every product carries a 2-year warranty covering manufacturing defects, in line with EU Directive 2019/771. If a weld fails, a joint separates, or something arrives structurally wrong, we repair it, replace it, or refund you.
Normal surface weathering and patina aren't defects, since that's expected behaviour for outdoor steel rather than a fault.
To make a claim, email us with photos and a description. We'd rather fix a genuine problem than argue about it.
What isn't covered?
- Damage from misuse, such as burning inappropriate materials or using accelerants
- Surface patina, discolouration, or cosmetic weathering
- Products modified after purchase
- Damage caused by rapid cooling, such as hosing down a hot product
If you're unsure whether something qualifies, just ask. We'd rather look at photos than have you assume the answer is no.
About us
Who actually makes these?
We do. SJR is a metal fabrication workshop in Riga, Latvia, and every product is cut, welded, and finished by our own team. Nothing is outsourced or imported and rebranded.
Our founder Jānis Sleņģis has worked in metal for over 25 years and still approves every design before it goes into production. You can read more on our about page.
Why are you cheaper than on Etsy?
Because marketplaces take a cut of every sale, and we no longer have to pay it here.
Our Etsy shop is where we started and it's still live with a 4.7 star rating. Selling direct simply means the fee that used to go to the platform now comes off your price instead.
Do you sell to businesses or in bulk?
Yes. Restaurants, campsites, hotels, and garden centres have all bought from us. We also do full custom fabrication work for commercial clients, which is the larger part of what our workshop does.
Email sjrisinajumi@inbox.lv with what you need and we'll come back with pricing.
How quickly do you reply to emails?
Usually within one business day, often faster. We're a small workshop, so your email goes to an actual person rather than a ticketing queue.
If you've asked something technical, you'll get an answer from someone who has actually built the product.
Still not sure
about something?
Email us. You'll hear back from the people who made it, usually within a business day, and we'd genuinely rather answer a question before you buy than deal with a return afterwards.
